A guest on the “28 minutes” programme of the French channel Arte, international relations specialist Öznur Küçüker Sirene described the dirty relationship between the HDP and the PKK. While Sirene’s remarks listing the grounds for the case to close down the HDP drew wide praise, the Arte channel that aired the programme was lynched on social media by supporters of terrorism.

There is truly a problem in understanding Türkiye’s internal dynamics. The HDP is a party with proven links to the PKK, a terrorist organisation that has killed more than 40,000 people since 1984. It is not me saying this. There is a 609-page indictment presented by the Court of Cassation, which absolutely must be read and which exposes the HDP/PKK relationship point by point.
Just one example. The HDP’s co-chair, Selahattin Demirtaş, openly said during a rally that he would erect a statue of PKK ringleader Abdullah Öcalan, currently imprisoned on İmralı.
“This is unacceptable”
Can you imagine a French party leader saying “we will erect a statue of the ISIS leader”? This is unacceptable.”
“The foreign press does not see the Diyarbakır mothers”
Likewise, there is an issue the foreign press never addresses: the situation of the Diyarbakır mothers. These mothers have been staging a sit-in in front of the HDP’s provincial headquarters in Diyarbakır since 2019. They say their children were deceived by the HDP and sent to PKK camps.
All this evidence brings the HDP’s relations with the PKK to light. The majority of the public, not only the ruling party but the opposition as well, believes the HDP has ties to the PKK.
