International relations expert and our fellow townswoman Öznur Küçüker Sirene explained to French journalists the U.S. stance on the FETÖ and Osman Kavala issues. The French guests in the studio struggled to respond to the words of Öznur, a native of Kastamonu, who also pushed back against the attitude of the U.S. and France towards Türkiye. Our fellow townswoman took part in a current-affairs programme on Arte TV, the Franco-German channel. Reacting to the U.S. position on Türkiye on many issues, Sirene asked the French journalists: “We do not like constantly being lectured on human rights by the U.S. and the EU. They are not credible at all. And why is that?”

Sirene continued: “Take the example of the United States; you have seen what this country did to inmates in Iraq, Afghanistan and the Guantanamo prison. And there is a very recent example as well: the situation of Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, currently detained in the United Kingdom. If extradited to the U.S., Assange faces up to 175 years in prison. There is also another very important issue: the Fetullah Gülen question. Gülen is the ringleader of the Fetullahist Terrorist Organisation behind the July 15, 2016 coup attempt. Evidence that Gülen is a terrorist has been submitted to the U.S., and even though the U.S. has received this evidence, it hides behind the legal process when it comes to extraditing him to Türkiye. Yet today it wants Osman Kavala released. This is a deeply contradictory position.”
