‘Türkiye Could Return to the F-35 Programme’: Expert Explains

International relations expert Öznur Küçüker Sirene said that Türkiye’s return to the F-35 programme could come onto the agenda at the NATO Summit.
The recent wars in the Middle East and between Russia and Ukraine have reshaped the global balance of power.

Speaking to Gülcan Ayboğan of Türkiye Gazetesi, international relations expert Öznur Küçüker Sirene noted that the recent wars were no coincidence, and said the process stretching from the Moscow attack to the NATO Summit heralded a new geopolitical era.

MOSCOW’S INVIOLABILITY CALLED INTO QUESTION

Noting that Ukraine had carried out one of the most comprehensive attacks on Moscow since the beginning of the war, Sirene said the attack had not only military but also psychological consequences.

Pointing out that energy facilities were targeted in attacks using drone swarms and missiles, that airports were closed and that serious security concerns arose in the capital, Sirene said: “With this attack, Ukraine sent Russia the message that the war would now be felt not only in Kyiv and Kharkiv but in the very centre of Moscow. It became clear that Moscow is not untouchable.”

ALL EYES ON A HISTORIC NATO SUMMIT
Stating that the NATO Summit to be hosted by Türkiye in July could be one of the most important summits in history, Sirene said it would be wrong to speak of a rupture between the U.S. and NATO.

Noting that Türkiye would rise to an even more critical position in this period thanks to its defence industry, Black Sea security and its role in the Middle East, Sirene said the summit in Ankara could have important consequences not only for NATO but also for Türkiye–U.S. relations.

NEW EXPECTATIONS FOR THE F-35

Stating that one of the most notable items for Türkiye at the NATO Summit would be the F-35 process, Sirene said she had positive expectations regarding the programme.

Recalling the messages President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan gave after his contacts with the U.S. and the statements of U.S. Ambassador to Ankara Tom Barrack, Sirene noted that the international press had also assessed that the issue could be resolved at the NATO Summit.

Sirene said: “I believe Türkiye’s return to the F-35 programme could become clear during the NATO Summit. Such a development would once again powerfully demonstrate the importance the U.S. attaches to Türkiye.”
